House of the Dragon has come a long way in its first season, and it's all been leading to this...the biggest civil war in sci-fi/fantasy on this side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this episode of The Cast Beyond the Wall, hosts Caleb Masters and Daniel Stull are re-joined by special returning guest host, Ben Friend, to discuss what the events of this episode and cliffhanger mean for team Rhaenyra AKA "the blacks," and the viewers.

Following last week's "The Green Council," which focused on the Hightowers AKA "the greens," in King's Landing, this week's episode shifts the focus to our other lead, Rhaenyra, from her base in Dragonstone. Rhaenys delivers the troubling news of both Visery's death and also Aegon II's being crowned king in her place.

With Corlys "the sea snake" Velaryon making a surprise return from the brink of death to pledge support from Rhaenyra and Daemon counting dragons, it seems the Blacks are not out of the game despite lacking loyalty from many of the key lords of the seven kingdoms. The name of the game is "war," especially after Lucerys is murdered by Aemond's dragon in a chase the bards will sing about for generations to come.

Does this episode provide an adequate cliffhanger to leave us wanting more for season 2?

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • Does this episode provide a satisfying close to the first season of House of the Dragon?
  • The consequences of Aemond's actions on Houe Targaryen
  • The crowning of Rhaenyra as queen on Dragonstone
  • Daemon's obsession with war
  • Do the Blacks have the support they need to wage a war?
  • Corlys's unexpected return from the edge of death
  • What do we expect to see next season
  • This week's winner, loser, and wild card player

According to the IMDB synopsis, “The Black Queen” is described as:

"While mourning a tragic loss, Rhaenyra tries to hold the realm together, and Daemon prepares for war."

Everything we've seen in House of the Dragon so far has been leading up to Visery's death and the inevitably bloody fallout, and in true Game of Thrones tradition, "The Green Council," delivers a pulse-pounding episode nine race between Alicent and Otto Hightower to secure Aegon ahead of his coronation.

The Cast Beyond the Wall hosts Caleb Masters and Daniel Stull are joined by first-time guest, Adam Kemp, to break down each scene of this week's episode before making predictions for what could happen next. With so much on the line, has House of the Dragon persuaded us to empathize with Alicent's point of view?

Kemp brings his book reader knowledge to the especially tense episode, outlining when the show took liberties with some of the more ambiguous source material.

Is this the paradigm-shifting ninth chapter we've been waiting for?

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • Is this the climactic episode nine we expected?
  • The immediate fallout of King Viserys's death
  • Have we given Alicent enough credit?
  • Rhaenys's big dragon play
  • How do you keep Ser Eryck and Arryk Cargyll's names and allegiances straight?
  • The white worm's larger scheme
  • Is it ok to feel bad for Aegon?
  • Our selected winners, losers, and wild card players for the week

According to the IMDB synopsis, “The Green Council” is described as:

"While Alicent enlists Cole and Aemond to track down Aegon, Otto gathers the great houses of Westeros to affirm their allegiance."

In this bonus episode of The Cast Beyond the Wallhost Caleb Masters is rejoined by guest Chad Parizman to check in on how well The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has maintained its momentum since we initially covered the first two episodes earlier this year.

After learning more about Chad's previous relationship with Middle Earth, we discuss what the first season has done well, where it's struggled to captivate audiences the same way as Jackson's trilogy, and what the series could do in the future.

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • What makes the story compelling, yet, the pacing a challenge
  • Which characters and stories have been the highlight so far
  • Whether or not the series jumped the shark at episode 7
  • Is Halbrand who he says he is?
  • But seriously, who is the stranger?

According to the IMDB synopsisLord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is described as:

“Epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.”

After eight episodes, The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to cover King Viserys's swan song, "The Lord of the Tides." Hosts Caleb Masters and Daniel Stull are joined by first-time guest, Chad Parizman, to discuss whether the latest chapter does King Viserys Targaryen(Paddy Considine) justice.

After yet another time jump (six years in this instance), Vaemond Velaryon petitions against Lucerys Targaryen's claim as lord of Driftmark, calling them illegitimate children, after Corlys "the sea snake" Velaryon has grown deathly ill in the second war for the Stepstones. To defend their family's claim, Rhaenyra and Daemon travel to King's Landing to plead with Viserys on his deathbed. Meanwhile, Alicent and Otto Hightower plan to leverage the petition to bring Rhaenyra's entire position as heir into question.

Before his final day, King Viserys sees the division in the Targaryen house and makes one last attempt to bring the families together over dinner in hopes of making peace. Though a noble effort the resentment and bad blood run deep.

Does Viserys's last stand have any hope of reshaping the wars to come?

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • Our overall reviews of "The Lord of the Tides"
  • Whether or not Vaemond Velaryon's petition is warranted
  • How Viserys's last hurrah of defending Rhaenyra's claim better positions Rhaenys and the Velaryons
  • Prince Daemon's best quip yet
  • What made the last family dinner so impactful
  • What Alicent will do with the king's dying words
  • Our predictions for what's to come in the iconic Game of Thrones episode 9
  • This week's winner, loser, and wildcard player

According to the IMDB synopsis, “The Lord of the Tides” is described as:

"Six years later. With the Driftmark succession suddenly critical, Rhaenyra attempts to strike a bargain with Rhaenys."

After the death of Laena, the Targaryen and Velaryon families gather together for the funeral and wake that followed. Boiling beneath the surface were the years of resentment that have festered between Rhaenyra and Alicent. It all comes to a head after Aemond claims Laena's dragon, Vhagar, and loses his eye in a brawl with his cousins.

Has House of the Dragon finally achieved its first Game of Thrones-tier feud?

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • Our overall reviews of "Driftmark"
  • Was this episode poorly lit?
  • As the families draw battlelines, who should we be rooting for?
  • The marriage of Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen
  • What Aemond mounting Vhagar could mean for House Hightower
  • The unclear rules related to the dragons
  • This week's winner, loser, and wildcard player

In this The Cast Beyond the Wall podcast discussion, returning guest Lanie James joins hosts Caleb Masters and Daniel Stull to cover the sixth chapter of House of the Dragon, "The Princess and the Queen."

The story jumps forward by ten years, the most of any episode of the series yet, and introduces us to an older Rhaenyra Targaryen (now played by Emma D'Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (now played by Olivia Cooke) who have seemingly reversed their power statuses despite Rhaenyra remaining the heir to the throne. With the next generation of Targaryen and Velaryon children now being caught in the middle of the family feud as King Viserys slowly wilts away, it's only a matter of time before war breaks out. Meanwhile, as each of Westeros's most powerful women seeks to either make good with or unseat the other, "The Princess and the Queen," reveals one of the kingdom's major shadow players, Larys Strong, to the game.

Does the latest time jump derail the previous episodes' momentum or does it give the story a fresh reboot bringing us closer to a satisfying conclusion?

Today’s podcast topics include:

  • Our overall reviews of "The Princess and the Queen"
  • The consequences of the ten-year time jump on the story we've seen so far
  • What Larys Strong's big play might mean for Alicent
  • Ser Criston's 180-degree pivot toward hatred of Rhaenyra
  • This week's winner, loser, and wildcard player

According to the IMDB synopsis, “The Princess and the Queen” is described as:

"Ten years later. Rhaenyra navigates Alicent's continued speculation about her children, while Daemon and Laena weigh an offer in Pentos."

In our return episode, hosts Caleb Masters, Daniel Stull, and Austin Lucari reunite for another review, analysis, and fan vs fan debate over what to expect from the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

If you’re a longtime listener, welcome back! Much like Jon Snow, you just can’t keep a good Targaryn down. Today's topics include:

  • Special announcements regarding what will be different about this season of The Cast Beyond the Wall

  • What happened to the first Game of Thrones successor series, Bloodmoon.

  • The September 1st debut of Amazon's Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power series and what the completion could mean for our favorite dark Westerosi fantasy.
